Movie Night is ON! Sat Sep 24th 5pm

Thank you to everyone who crossed their fingers and toes for good weather tomorrow.  The forecast is for a slightly chilly but dry day on Saturday, and we will begin showing the movie (The Minions Movie) at 7:45.  Bring chairs and blankets!

Please join us in our beautiful new park tomorrow at 5 p.m.   There will be face painting, glitter tattoos, popcorn and coffee for grownups.  Dora’s Express will have a value-priced menu in case you want to skip the cooking tomorrow night.

In addition to the Durand Neighbourhood Association’s program of events, we are going to have a bike lane celebration in addition to the movie night.  Please see the previous blog entry for details.

Fun for one and all!  It’s great that our park is buzzing with all of this community activity.

Movie In The Park

Movie In The Park

Durand Art and Movie Night

Hi Duranders,

You may have had the good luck to run into some artists painting in the Durand neighbourhood this summer.  These intrepid artists from the Dundas Valley School of Art did not let the high heat and humidity deter them from completing fabulous paintings of familiar places.  Now you will have a chance to view the collection and buy the artwork.  The opening is at the DVSA on September 15.  The show runs until October 17.  See the postcard for details.   You will not want to miss this!

Get ready for the Minions!  FREE movie in the park, FREE popcorn and FREE coffee for the adults.  We will also welcome Dora’s Food Express for a value-priced option for dinner.  It’s all happening September 17 (rain date September 24).  Come out, enjoy our brand new park and a free movie.  What could be better?

Mark Your Calendar!

We hope your summer is going well and you are enjoying the hot, humid weather!  This was a good year to have the splash pad open at Durand Park.

Mark your calendar for the following upcoming events:

August 24 – PED ride.  Alissa Golden, Heritage Planner, will lead a bike ride through the Durand neighbourhood, sharing interesting history and details about our neighbourhood. Meet at Park and Hunter at the Sobi station at 6:30 p.m.

September 17 – Movie night in the park.  Join us for a showing of the Minions movie.  The movie will start about 8, but come early to reserve your space with your blanket, have your face painted (kids only), and eat a hot dog or two.  Popcorn, face painting and movie are free!

October 18 – AGM – an important meeting for the upcoming DNA year.  Join us at 6 p.m. at the YWCA on MacNab Street.  Meet your neighbours and hear updates about the latest in our neighbourhood.

October 29 – Durand Park Halllowe’en – Costumes for kids and adults most welcome — starts at 5:30 p.m.  More details to follow!

In case you missed it, Hamilton is rolling out pedestrian cross-overs in key locations in Hamilton.  One of those locations is at Queen and Herkimer, a notoriously dangerous crossing for pedestrians.  Read all about it at:  Spec article These pedestrian cross-overs mean new rules for drivers and pedestrians.  We can all adapt our behaviours to the new rules, just as we do when we drive in a foreign country.  Pedestrians will have to exercise caution as well — the goal is to have everyone arrive home safely.

40th Anniversary Celebrations -Best Party Ever!

Hello Everyone and a great big thank you!

To all those Duranders and community neighbours that helped the Durand Neighbourhood Association celebrate its 40th Anniversary,  your Executive says a great big thank you.  The weather cooperated…it must have been all those sun dances that I performed while checking our daily weather forecasts. The energy in Durand Park was awesome. As part of our revitalization plans for Durand Park, it was our intention to provide fun activities that brought families, seniors, pets, and the community to the park….it is obviously working…..and there will be more to come….as we begin public consultation in 2013 for major improvements to our one and only park…the Durand Park!  Stay tuned and be a part of this process….it is for you!

To Sarah, Claudia, Anders, Alfred, Linda, Frances , Jon and Dennis (the DNA Executive)….just a fabulous team effort to celebrate our 40th with our friends and community in Durand and our friends who joined us from our bordering neighbourhoods. We are a small group, but we are mighty….I look forward to the next 40….

To Tim, Mark, (our movie crew) Susan, Graeme and the crew at Gorilla Cheese, and our live, local band, the Altobeelays….thank you for all that you do for community….this was the best ever….just a pleasure to work with you….

To Diane (Dent) and Herman (Turkstra)…thank you for coming and sharing your early years  with this amazing neighbourhood association….without you we would not have been celebrating last night…you set the standard for  those of us who have followed you….I hope we continue to make you proud of the Durand and what we do.

To  Councillor Jason (Farr)  and  Ward 1& 2 School Trustee, Judith (Bishop) ….Thank you for making this a “must attend” event.  Your support for the DNA and  collaboration to continue to make the Durand Neighbourhood the best place to live, work, and play,….and vision of the City….”to raise a child”…..could not have been more evident than last night.

And finally to  MP David ( Christoperson) I still do not know what to say…I am still trying to get my head around this…THANK YOU!
I am honoured to have been considered and awarded the Queen Elizabeth 11 Diamond Jubilee Medal.
And of course, you are so passionate about community and your comments last night were inspiring and fitting for a 40th Anniversary Celebration of Community Service.

As Always,
