Hi Daryl,
I am following up on the email I sent you on October 6 on behalf of the
Durand Neighbourhood Association (DNA) regarding the provision of safe
and economical pedestrian crossovers for Hamilton. As I mentioned
in the email, Durand would be happy to host a pilot project for a new
design. This could be seen as part of the five year review of the
Durand Traffic Study.
At yesterday's DNA AGM several residents expressed concern about the
lack of safe pedestrian crossings in the Durand, especially for
accessing the Durand Park via Herkimer and Charlton. Durand is
home to many seniors and children, so this is especially important to
us.
When I mentioned that the City removed all pedestrian crossing signs
(warning motorists) and is just letting the road markings fade,
residents were shocked. They said they assume that the street
markings mean there is an official pedestrian crossing! This is
extremely unsafe, and clearly leaves the City open to lawsuits by
pedestrians who, understandably, believe the pedestrian road markings
mean there is a pedestrian crossing.
Please let me know when we can begin working on this important issue.
Thanks very much for your help,
Nicholas
